William Bly

The Maine Criminal Defense Group

Mr. Bly’s practice is devoted nearly exclusively to criminal defense. He has successfully defended persons charged with crimes in both federal and state court on a myriad of charges including manslaughter, aggravated felony assault, simple assault, criminal threatening with a deadly weapon, reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, domestic violence assault, possession of drugs, trafficking in drugs, conspiracy to traffic in drugs, drunk driving, OUI, DUI, DWI, aggravated DWI, DWI involving serious accidents with bodily injury, high breath test DWI cases, DWI cases where a blood draw was performed and driving under the influence of drugs.

Mr. Bly is one of only a few attorneys who has received his certification as a Breath Alcohol Technician as recognized and issued by the United States Department of Transportation. In addition, Mr. Bly is qualified as both a practitioner and instructor in standardized field sobriety tests in accordance with the standards set forth by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Mr. Bly is adept at recognizing and seizing upon the myriad of mistakes law enforcement makes during their collective investigation of DWI crimes. It is extremely rare for a police officer to know as much about standardized field sobriety testing and breath testing as Mr. Bly does.

Mr. Bly attends numerous DWI seminars each year throughout the country as well as an annual DWI Defense Seminar sponsored by the National College of DUI Defense at Harvard Law School. Recently, Mr. Bly attended and passed an extremely rigorous course on forensic blood and urine testing in DWI cases in San Diego, Calif. In addition, Mr. Bly receives regular professional education updates in the area of federal criminal defense. He recently attended a five-day seminar in Portland Ore. on defending drug crimes and a federal sentencing advocacy course in New Orleans back in 2010. He also attends monthly “mini-topic” training sessions sponsored by the Maine Federal Defender’s Office.

Mr. Bly is a graduate of the Spence Trial Lawyer College, which is a 3+ week intensive trial advocacy course. Entrance into the Trial Lawyer’s College is based on a competitive application and the training standards are rigorous. Many attorneys throughout the country apply for admission and most are rejected for one reason or another. In addition, Attorney Bly has successfully completed the Graduate Level 1 course at the Trial Lawyer’s College and has plans to attend the Graduate Level 2 course in 2018.

Mr. Bly is a member of the New Hampshire State Bar Association, the Maine State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the National Criminal Association Defense Lawyers, the New Hampshire Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Maine Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the American Trial Lawyers Association, Maine Association of Trial Lawyers, the National College of DUI Defense and the York County (Maine) Bar Association.
