I graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1975, was a salesman for one year, and then attended law school, graduating from DePaul University in 1979. In law school, I was an editor of the Law Review and published a Note, Ex Parte Contacts in Informal Rulemaking Proceedings: Home Box Office v. FCC, 27 DePaul Law Review 489 (1978).
After law school, I became a law clerk for Justice William G. Clark of the Illinois Supreme Court, after which I joined Wildman, Harrold, Allen & Dixon, where I was elected partner in 1988. I started my own firm on April 14, 2000 and am now the manager of the Patterson Law Firm, LLC. After concentrating my practice for many years in commercial litigation, with a heavy emphasis on emergency business litigation, I wrote a book, Handling the Business Emergency: temporary restraining orders and preliminary injunctions, that is now published by the American Bar Association.
I am admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court and have been admitted to practice pro hac vice in many other courts throughout the United States. As a member of the American Bar Association, the DuPage County Bar Association and the Illinois State Bar Association, I have been active on committees relevant to businesses, professionals, entrepreneurs, and the selection of judges.

Prior writing and teaching includes co-authoring a bi-monthly column on non-pattern jury instructions for the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, teaching an on line continuing legal education course on the attorney client privilege, and speaking to industry groups about the attorney client privilege, e-commerce, and expert witness rules.
