Torrey Pines Law Group

I grew up in San Diego but spent many years on the East Coast and Midwest as a partner in a large law firm, leading the legal function of the largest US university related to its technology commercialization efforts, and helping bring a few therapeutics and medical devices to market. When complemented with my biotechnology law practice, I've assisted clients with translating and commercializing life-saving technologies throughout the world.

I created Torrey Pines Law Group when I returned home to San Diego in 2013. Throughout my career, I have successfully represented pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, medical device, biotechnology, specialty chemical, digital health, healthcare software, artificial intelligence, and convergence technology clients for more than 20 years. The "convergence" often includes machine learning, deep learning, and complex algorithms.

My areas of focus include:

  • Intellectual Property, transactional, and regulatory counseling
  • International patent preparation and prosecution
  • IP and commercial transactions
  • Technology licensing
  • Investment funding and due diligence
  • Legal opinion drafting
  • Pharmaceutical Lifecycle Management
  • Litigation avoidance
  • IP infringement litigation

In addition to my private practice, I served as chief IP counsel to a medical device company which develops artificial intelligence software for cancer detection. I also served as chief IP counsel for an international biopharmaceutical company where I helped commercialize immuno-oncology and cardiovascular drugs throughout the world. For many years, I was recognized nationally for my law practice by The Best Lawyers in America®.

I've also been an academic advisor to entrepreneurship centers at the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton, Law, and Medicine), Washington University in St. Louis, and UC San Diego. I was also an Adjunct Professor at Washington University School of Law where I taught a Biotechnology Law intersession course.

Outside my law practice, I thoroughly enjoy hiking the California backcountry. What I love most, however, is spending time outdoors -- every single day -- with my daughter, family and friends.

I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry/Chemistry from UC San Diego where I was an undergraduate Research Scholar. I then received a Juris Doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law where I was Editor-in-Chief of the Pittsburgh Journal of Technology Law and Policy.
