Roy returned to Hawaii in 1976 and began his practice of law at the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office of the City and County of Honolulu. He so distinguished himself as a trial attorney that he was asked to start and head the Career Criminal Unit for the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office of the County of Kauai. In 1979, the then law firm of Shim, Sigal, Tam & Naito felt that Roy’s trial experience and talents could be better used in the area of personal injury law, and asked him to join their team of injury attorneys in Hawaii as an associate. The move proved to be a good fit. He became a junior partner in 1981, a senior partner in 1988, and today, Roy is president, chairman of the board, and senior managing partner of Shim & Chang, Attorneys at Law.
