 This more comment than answer, but: first I love the fact, Gyi, that you answered a question that you asked. A lawyer to the core!

Second, for those who don't know, Gyi and his colleagues put a mountain of free stuff out on Internet on a daily basis about internet marketing of law firms, and all of it has been, in experience, first-rate.

This is as unsolicited a gush as you will ever read -- I don't know him, not a client (maybe someday when we're deeper into the black!), and I am technologically inept as anyone else admitted to practice in 1974. But I have been constantly amazed -- and grateful -- for the generous complementary contributions on marketing from Gyi. Pro bono indeed!

I'd love to see this discussion morph into a discussion of what sorts of practices are best suited for "Internet-based marketing."  My experience is that certain types of practicing can expect and do receive significant results from Internet marketing.

I like to break internet-based marketing into two broad groups:  Direct client generation and Professional Reputation Building.

Direct client generation methods work best for consumer based practices (i.e. injury, bankruptcy, criminal, family, etc).

Professional reputation building works better for business based practices (IP, corporate lit, secrurities, etc)

That is not to say that there isn't some overlap.  The truth is, lawyers should be focusing on both.

The biggest obstacle to successful law firm internet marketing is typically not "know-how".  It's time.

In order to reap real benefits from online marketing efforts, you have to invest time into these strategies.  Often times, time is the one thing lawyers don't have.

That is when considering a web consultant makes sense.
