About Kathryn Vanden Berk

KATHRYN M. VANDEN BERK is an attorney who focuses her law practice on nonprofit corporate and tax law, nonprofit governance, and employment issues.

Her clients include human service and public welfare, educational, and religious entities, public and private foundations, and organizations operating under group exemptions. She serves as adjunct faculty at the Axelson Center for Nonprofit Management, and presents seminars on issues of nonprofit governance, financial management, and risk management in the Chicago area and elsewhere. She is editor of the publication STARTING A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION IN ILLINOIS: DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME, a resource book for nonprofit organizations. Ms. Vanden Berk received both her B.A. (with distinction) and her J.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a member of the Chicago Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, and the Association of Consultants to Nonprofits.

Her clients are almost exclusively not-for-profit corporations, most of which are exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. These include religious, scientific, educational and charitable organizations such as churches, scientific research organizations, charter and public schools, dance companies, animal shelters, social service organizations and both public and private foundations.  Other clients include trade associations, mutual aid societies and social clubs.

She practiced law in the field of regulated health care for nine years in Madison, Wisconsin, representing such clients as the State Medical Society of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Association of Nursing Homes, and a number of health care practitioners. In 1988, Ms. Vanden Berk left the practice of law to become president of a residential treatment center for children, and she stayed in the field of nonprofit management for nine years.
