Bell Flooring Sciences are one of the very few flooring consulting firms in the country with in-house capability to conduct ground penetrating radar (GPR) concrete scanning (2D+3D) to locate post-tensioning (PT) cables, reinforcement, conduit, and other embeddings, allowing us to perform internal concrete relative humidity (RH) moisture testing. In 2003, we started performing concrete RH testing as one of the early adopters when this was a new test standard.

CONCRETE RH MOISTURE TESTING – SCAN BEFORE YOU DRILL When conducting internal relative humidity (RH) testing using in situ probes (ASTM F2170), or otherwise drilling into slabs, or coring, it is critical to conduct an internal scan of the concrete slab. Concrete slabs, suspended or on-ground, can have a variety of embedding, including post tensioning (PT) cables, electrical conduit, and numerous other items. Many floor consulting and testing agencies do not conduct internal concrete scanning because they do not have the necessary equipment to perform the task. Do not allow underequipped testing firms to drill into your clients concrete slab and risk damage to PT cables, MEP, and other concrete embeddings. Bell Flooring Sciences utilizes high-tech ground penetrating radar (GPR) for this purpose to properly locate and avoid slab embedding.

Carpet tile failure, on an elevated concrete slab, caused by excessive moisture and alkalinity levels, and carbonization at the surface. A multilayer polypropylene plastic moisture vapor retarder sheeting was installed, but levels exceeded its ability to prevent a failure as seen. Bell Flooring Sciences provides forensic commercial floor failure analytical testing and evaluation utilizing analytical protocols to determined the causes of the failed flooring system, and appropriate remediation. ASTM compliant concrete moisture testing can be performed to determine the equilibrium relative humidity levels. FLOORING INSTALLATION FORENSIC INSPECTION FOR EFFECTIVE VAPOR RETARDER. Quality Assurance Programs should include removing cores in existing concrete slabs-on-ground to determine key factors, if otherwise are unknown: • Existence of an effective vapor retarder directly under the slab to receive a moisture sensitive flooring system; • Concrete slab thickness for F2170 RH testing, and if needed, determination of layers of underlayments or toppings and their thickness. Some other determinations that core removal can be use for include: • Moisture testing of soils directly below the slab; • Confirm voids detected by GPR scanning; • Lab analysis of the core for possible contaminants, ASR, or other analysis. The black plastic shown, that was removed from under the core, is construction plastic that does not meet the requirements of the industry "Standard Specification for Plastic Water Vapor Retarders Used in Contact with Soil or Granular Fill under Concrete Slabs." The photograph also shows the terrazzo floor surface marked where ground penetrating radar (GPR) scanning was used to locate embeddings in the concrete slab prior to coring, and drilling for ASTM F2170 RH moisture testing.

Commercial Flooring Failure at a Gym / Fitness Center Excessive concrete slab moisture can cause catastrophic floor failures that can make a facility unusable due to trip hazards, mold and other microbial growth, and unacceptable aesthetics. In addition to testing for concrete slab moisture, slabs on grade should be inspected for an effective under-slab vapor retarder that meets relevant ACI and ASTM standards. If needed, cores should be drilled/removed for this purpose. Cores can also be lab analyzed for potential contamination or alkali silica reaction (ASR) issues that can affect flooring systems. Before coring, concrete slabs should be scanned with ground penetrating radar (GPR) to locate and avoid any embeddings in, or directly under, the slab. Bell Building Sciences can evaluate commercial flooring failures though a variety of analytical protocols. ASTM compliant concrete moisture testing can be performed.
