Eon Smith

Eon R. Smith is Founding Partner of  SMITH & COMPANY. Mr. Smith received his undergraduate and  first law degree from St. John's University in New York. He later attended Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad where he obtain his LEC authorising him to seek admission to practice throughout the English-speaking Caribbean. While in St. John's law school, Mr. Smith excelled in a number of clinical and trial advocacy programs, and was selected to serve as a Research Assistant for his criminal law professor, Michael A. Simons, a former Assistant United States Attorney. In this highly competitive position, Mr. Smith was acknowledged in particular for his research and writing skills relating to a law review article entitled, "Retribution for Rats: Cooperation, Punishment and Atonement," Vanderbilt Law Review, Vol. 56, 2003. This article examined the cooperation by defendants in the Federal System in the face of the multifaceted and complex Federal Sentencing Guidelines. In addition, Mr. Smith was one of three students selected by the Association of the Bar of the City of New York as a St. John's University School of Law Fellow.

In his second year of law school Mr. Smith was offered a position with the New York County (Manhattan) District Attorney's Office. Upon graduation, Mr. Smith accepted this offer, and held the position of Assistant District Attorney (ADA) in one of the office's Trial Bureaus. During his tenure at the District Attorney's Office, Mr. Smith was fortunate enough to try cases both as lead counsel and under the tutelage of seasoned ADAs. Not only was he responsible for conducting pre-trial investigations, drafting and arguing discovery-related motions, but he also prosecuted an array of criminal conduct ranging from violations to violent felonies.

After leaving the District Attorney's Office, Mr. Smith joined the law firm of Belluck & Fox, LLP as an associate and trial counsel. There, his prosecutorial experience allowed him to play a critical role in a variety of civil litigation cases including asbestos, personal injury, civil rights, employment discrimination and inadequate security.

In 2006 Mr. Smith started his own law firm, Smith & Company, with offices in Guyana and new York. The firm handles Criminal Defense (State, Magistrate, Federal & High Court), Immigration, Business and Divorce in its New York and Guyana offices with additional services in the areas of Estae & Trust, Land (Transport & Prescriptive Titles), Civil Matters (Power of Attorney, Contracts etc.) in its Guyana offices.  Mr. Smith also served as an adjunct Legal Studies Professor at St. John's University.

In addition to practicing law and teaching, Mr. Smith is a frequent lecturer at the Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil Rights and Economic Development Summer Prep Program for College Students, hosted by St. John's University School of Law. He also serves as a motivational speaker at various youth organizations and churches in the New York City area, and is seeking to continue those efforts in Guyana.
