We formed the law firm of Michael Sherman LLC with a fundamental and important purpose: to dramatically improve the way family law is practiced in Alabama thereby making a positive beneficial difference in the lives of our clients. As a result of our more than 20 years of combined experience, we have seen the devastating effects that divorce and other family law disputes can have on families, and particularly on children. Believing there must be a better way than the traditional 'scorched earth' litigation and the 'blank check' mentality of hourly billing used by most lawyers, we decided to form our own firm and do it a different way. Here is how we try to do that: 1. Putting the client at the core of all we do. We realize that without our clients, there is no law firm. As a result, every decision we make from technology and staffing decisions to our day to day operations are made in light of how it will benefit our clients. Everything we do is directed to helping clients make the transition (some would say transformation) from where they are when they hire us to where they want to be at the conclusion of their legal matter. We do so by determining our clients' expectations and goals from the outset of the case, then teaming with them to achieve those goals. We also take a comprehensive view of our client's situation, considering the legal and financial aspects of their case, as well as their psychological and emotional needs. 2. Leveraging technology. We have equipped ourselves with the cutting edge technology necessary to perform efficiently and respond effectively. Our investment allows our clients to benefit from our secure wireless networking, secure remote access tools, our Divorce Law Blog, paperless case management system, document management systems and online legal research. The result is more efficient lawyers able to better respond to clients and give them more value at reduced costs. 3. Using fixed fee agreements. We typically use fixed fee agreements instead of billing our clients by the hour. This allows our clients to know up front what their costs will be. No surprises. No invoices for $75 for a 20 minute phone call. 4. Experience and Expertise. Our two lawyers have in excess of 20 years of experience helping hundreds of families facing divorce and family law problems. We do not dabble in divorce and family law. We are active with local, state, and national organizations dedicated to the practice of family law.
