ATTORNEY PROFILE: MARK P. LOFTUS Mark P. Loftus was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in the western suburbs of Chicago. He graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School in 1978 and then attended Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1982. While attending Knox he was a recipient of the Cleaver Bridgeman Memorial Scholarship. In addition, he served as Co-Captain of the Varsity Basketball team. Upon graduating from Knox, Mr. Loftus then attended DePaul University College of Law. He earned his Juris Doctor in 1985. After graduation Mr. Loftus went to work for a large Chicago law firm that specialized in defense of medical malpractice, product liability and general negligence cases. During his four years with the firm he received invaluable instruction in the preparation and trial of personal injury lawsuits. In 1990, Mr. Loftus decided he wanted more hands-on trial experience and accepted a position with a prominent personal injury law firm. In six months Mr. Loftus was lead trial counsel for a young man who had suffered catastrophic brain injuries when his motorcycle was struck by a car. Over the course of the next several years, Mr. Loftus secured a number of large verdicts on behalf of his clients in Cook, DuPage, Lake and Kankakee counties. In addition to those verdicts, Mr. Loftus was also instrumental in several settlements over one million dollars. Mr. Loftus had always planned to open his own trial practice firm and did so in 1998. Shortly after doing so he was retained by a young woman whose doctor had failed to properly investigate a suspicious mass in her left breast. The mass was later diagnosed as Stage III cancer. The medical malpractice case Mr. Loftus eventually filed on her behalf was settled for $1.6 million dollars. Since that time, Mr. Loftus has secured a number of other significant settlements and verdicts, some of which are described in the Representative Cases link. While Mr. Loftus concentrates primarily in personal injury litigation, over the last several years the scope of his practice has expanded. The firm has become increasingly involved in employment litigation, particularly in the area of retaliatory or wrongful discharge cases. In addition, Mr. Loftus has been retained in several cases to pursue insurance companies for fraud or other improper conduct. Mr. Loftus also represents a select number of commercial enterprises in business disputes. Although the practice has diversified, Mr. Loftus brings the same level of commitment and integrity to every case. In addition to his professional activities, Mr. Loftus is a member of a number of legal organizations including the American Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association and the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association. In addition to those affiliations, Mr. Loftus is active in a number of charitable and community organizations including Chicago Volunteer Legal Services, the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce and Riverside Little League.
