Kathleen Pratt

Workplace Legal, APLC

Kathleen has advised corporations, startups, and high-level executives and professionals in complex labor, employment, and general business matters for almost 30 years. Her clients have included Fortune 500 companies, technology start-ups, multimedia ventures, manufacturing companies, law firms, and private foundations, among many others.

Kathleen holds the most prestigious “AV Preeminent 5.0” ranking, confirming that other judges and lawyers rank her at the very highest level of legal knowledge, experience, judgment, and overall professional excellence within the field. This is the highest rating that can be conferred upon an individual attorney or law firm, and very few lawyers and firms can claim it. Kathleen has held this honor continuously since 1998.

Prior to joining Workplace Legal, Kathleen served as General Counsel to a privately-held manufacturing company in Orange County, California. As General Counsel, Kathleen handled all labor, employment, and HR matters for the company, including creating the corporate HR infrastructure, providing day-to-day advice and counseling on employee issues, and managing the company’s litigation and ADR matters. Before that, Kathleen was Senior Counsel at Image Entertainment and Co-Founder at Sloan Pratt LLP, a labor and employment law boutique in San Francisco. Kathleen began her career as an Associate Attorney at the international law firm Heller Ehrman LLP.

In addition to her counseling and litigation practice, Kathleen has an extensive background in alternate dispute resolution (ADR). Kathleen has served on the Mediation Panel for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California where she mediated labor, employment, and general business disputes. She was also hired by the Supreme Court of Nicaragua and the World Bank to provide intensive trainings in mediation, arbitration, and general conflict resolution techniques to judges, former ambassadors, diplomats, and attorneys. Kathleen also helped draft the Rules of Evidence and Procedure for the International War Crimes Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and has served as an International Election Supervisor in Mozambique, Haiti, and elsewhere.

Kathleen has also conceived, launched, and operated several of her own ventures.  In addition to co-founding her employment law boutique in San Francisco, Kathleen developed and produced a series of documentary films about women leading lives of service around the world.  She also worked with CBS Productions on a pilot television series that she conceived based on her experiences in international human rights and high-profile international conflict situations. Kathleen brings an extraordinarily broad and deep entrepreneurial and business background to Workplace Legal, and that allows her to provide excellent strategic advice and practical, real-world guidance to her clients.

Kathleen is a member of the Labor & Employment Law Section of the California Lawyers Association.  She is admitted to practice before the California Supreme Court and all state and federal courts in California, including the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals and the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Southern, Central, and Eastern Districts of California.
