David Teddy

David Teddy is a lifelong resident of Shelby, North Carolina. He graduated from Shelby Senior High School in 1981 where he was a member of the Student Council. Mr. Teddy attended the University of Tennessee where he majored in marketing and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He graduated with honors from UT where he was a member of the Cross Examination Debate Association.
Mr. Teddy attended Campbell University School of Law and obtained his J.D. degree in 1988. While at Campbell, Teddy was elected president of the Student Bar Association. He was selected to participate as a member of National Moot Court team. In his final year at Campbell, the Student Bar Association created the “David R. Teddy Innovative Leadership and Service Award.” This is given each year during the annual Law Day banquet to a Campbell Student who demonstrates a keen sense of leadership and service to the law school. Mr. Teddy was also the recipient of the Fred O. Dennis Citizenship award.
After graduating from law school, Mr. Teddy began his legal career in Shelby as an associate with Shelby city attorney, Michael S. Kennedy. After one year as an associate, Mr. Teddy became a partner and the firm name was changed to Kennedy & Teddy. In 1995, Mr. Teddy formed a new firm with his friend and fellow Campbell alumnus, Ralph Meekins. The firm of Teddy & Meekins opened for business in 1995.
Mr. Teddy’s practice is devoted exclusively to the defense of criminal cases with special emphasis on crimes that qualify for the death penalty. Mr. Teddy also has specialized training in the defense of individuals accused of driving while impaired.
In 1999, Teddy became certified by the North Carolina State Bar as a specialist in North Carolina criminal law. He is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the National College of DUI Defense, North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers, North Carolina Bar Association, and Cleveland County Bar Association where he has served as president. He was selected by the North Carolina Indigent Services Commission as the provisional counsel appointed in all first-degree murder cases in Cleveland County.
