Jeffrey W. Cowan is a Los Angeles employment attorney and business trial lawyer based in Santa Monica, California. Mr. Cowan has an "AV ® Preeminent" rating from Martindale-Hubbell. From 2007 through 2014, Mr. Cowan has been named a "Southern California Super Lawyer".
Jeffrey Cowan and his colleagues at The Cowan Law Firm focus on sexual harassment, unlawful discrimination (e.g., race, religious, pregnancy, disability), wrongful termination, whistleblower violations, Family Medical Leave Act and CFRA violations, wage claims, class actions, fraud, breach of contract, trade secret theft, unfair competition, elder abuse and wrongful death. They have recovered many millions of dollars for their clients. See http://www.cowan-law.com/index.php for examples of matters handled and results achieved.
Mr. Cowan earned his B.A. (cum laude) from Cornell University in 1986 and his J.D. from the UCLA School of Law in 1991. In law school, Mr. Cowan served as the constitutional law teaching assistant for Professor Jonathan Varat, and he completed the Moot Court Honors Program.
Before starting his own firm, Mr. Cowan was a partner and an associate at Kendig & Ross, an "AV ® Preeminent" boutique in Century City where he spent nine years practicing complex business litigation and employment law. His clients ranged from Fortune 500 corporations to smaller businesses in Los Angeles and all over United States. Individual clients ranged from celebrities to just "regular folk."
Mr. Cowan then spent 2 years at an "AV ® Preeminent" firm that specialized in high stakes business trials.
Published opinions in lawsuits that Mr. Cowan handled at trial and appeal include Kim V. J. F. Enterprises, 42 Cal. App. 4th 849 (1996), and Cowan v. Krayzman, 196 Cal. App. 4th 907 (2011).
Mr. Cowan has considerable experience with jury trials, court trials and arbitrations; and he has studied trial advocacy with some of the nation's leading trial lawyers. Mr. Cowan's comfort presenting his cases in the courtroom arise primarily from two things: (1) preparation and (2) his more than 25 years experience performing non-legal magic: delighting audiences as a professional magician. Jeffrey Cowan's performances have ranged from Hollywood’s Magic Castle nightclub to the SEMA trade show in Las Vegas, the Playboy Mansion, the Canadian and Dutch embassies in Washington D.C., Beverly Hills society affairs, and fraternity and sorority formals at Cornell University. In law school, Mr. Cowan co-authored (with Benjamin Garth) How to Eat Fire Without Indigestion (then hailed as the best text of its kind), and he has published original sleight-of-hand-tricks for use by other magicians.
