Steven Zeller

Steven McMahon Zeller is a partner in Jenner & Block’s Chicago office and is a member of the Firm’s Intellectual Property Practice. Mr. Zeller practices primarily in patent litigation and counseling related to litigation. He has represented clients in numerous areas of technology, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, metal alloys, computer software and hardware and electronics. Mr. Zeller has broad experience in all aspects of patent litigation. He has recently acted as trial counsel in three multi-week trials, two of which were tried to a jury. In one, Mr. Zeller successfully argued a motion for summary judgment of non-infringement on one claim of a patent concerning new vegetable oils. The other matters involved medical devices and electronic circuits for lighting. Mr. Zeller currently represents a client in a dispute over the inventorship of therapies that simulate EPO and stimulate red-blood cell production. Mr. Zeller was involved in successfully compelling arbitration of the matter under the parties’ research agreement. Mr. Zeller has extensive experience in pre-litigation investigation and preparation of pleadings, all phases of discovery, motion practice, pre-trial and post-trial activities. In addition, Mr. Zeller has experience in other areas of intellectual property litigation, including cases involving trademarks, copyrights, trade dress, unfair competition and trade secrets. Mr. Zeller also counsels clients on a variety of intellectual property issues, including patent opinions, evaluations and licensing. Mr. Zeller is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the ABA’s Intellectual Property and Litigation Sections and the Intellectual Property Committee of the ABA’s Litigation Section. Mr. Zeller received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Iowa State University in 1989 and received his J.D. from the Northwestern University School of Law in 1996. While at Northwestern, Mr. Zeller served as a note and comment editor on the Northwestern University Law Review. Mr. Zeller is a member of the bar of the State of Illinois, the United States District Courts for the Northern and Central Districts of Illinois, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He also is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
